WORKING WITHIN THE FAMILY SYSTEM Chung (1993) outlines aspects of family dynamics to observe when several family members are present. It is helpful to understand which family members agree and which are in conflict, who puts up barriers and who speaks openly, who has decision-making power and what the rules are (Blacker and Jordan 2004). In this way the social worker can assist families in finding new ways of coping during crisis, handling the tasks of preparation for death such as saying good-byes, thank you, giving and asking for forgiveness, and making decisions about end-of-life care. Kramer and colleagues found that families were at risk for conflict if they had a history of conflict or experienced communication constraints (Kramer et al. 2010).
